What is Single Volunteers?

Single Volunteers, a global volunteering organization, was founded by Catherine Robertson and Dana Katherine Kressierer; two single women who got tired of trying to figure out where to meet available, professional, smart, real people with whom to develop new friendships and relationships. Catharine and Dana decided to create an atmosphere where that is possible, and through which they can give something back to the community. Thus the birth of Single Volunteers. Single Volunteers has grown to include chapters around the globe, and additional chapters are being added every year.

The South Florida chapter (SVSF) was started in October 1998 and continues to grow. We have over a thousand members on our weekly email list, and at any given time there are as many as two hundred active volunteers working with us. We currently volunteer and host social events throughout Palm Beach, Broward, and Dade counties.

How does Single Volunteers of South Florida work?

Most of us want to help the community but have trouble finding the time. That is where SVSF fits in. Our project leaders work with any interested non-profit organizations to find projects in which SVSF volunteers can help.

These projects can be anything from answering phones during a telethon to building houses for needy families; staffing blood drives to cleaning beaches and parks. The SVSF project leader compiles a team of volunteers who will get together to get the project done. It's simple, really--we're just trying to bring people together in a productive, positive environment.

How do I become a member?

Join our mailing list to be added to our ever-growing group of singles. You'll receive weekly event updates and information via email. Best of all, membership is free. For more information and membership requirements, see the Join SVSF page.

If you want to volunteer but don't feel SVSF is the right organization for you, please see our SVSF Partner Links page for other volunteering opportunities in the South Florida area.

How do SVSF events get coordinated?

We rely on SVSF members to step up and serve as event coordinators and on-site leaders for all of our SVSF sponsored activities. Members also fill all of the executive committee roles that keep SVSF running.

Our leaders are a very special breed of volunteer. Not only do they give of themselves on the volunteer projects, but they also work behind the scenes to arrange the projects and communicate the details to interested members.

Currently SVSF is run 100% by the leaders. In order to avoid having to charge any sort of membership fee, we ask project leaders to donate the items necessary for an event, as well as for members to make donations to cover any expenses. The majority of volunteer activities, however, require only a small commitment of time and effort to get the job done.

For further information on how to get started leading events - please read "How to Lead a Single Volunteers of South Florida Event in 20 minutes a day, or less!" located in the Leadership Information shelf of our Documents Library or check out our Build Your Resume page.

If I don't have email, can I still be involved?

SVSF is a free internet-only group. We unfortunately do not offer a snail-mail newsletter because of the costs involved. Phone calls are also not available, as we do not have a dedicated SVSF phone line.

However, you can still join us! If you have a friend with email, they are more then welcome to sign up for you, and all of our correspondence will be sent to their address. Or, you can get a free email account through services such as Yahoo which you can access through any computer with access to the World Wide Web (such as your public library or local Kinko's Copy Shop).

What if I meet someone? Can I still volunteer?

One of the things that makes SVSF unique is that when you attend events and socials, you meet other singles. We have many "success stories" of people who have met through SVSF activities - and those couples always want to know what they can do once they no longer consider themselves single.

If you meet someone and begin a relationship, we ask that you no longer sign up to attend volunteer events. The events are designed to get single people together while doing good for the community. Having non-singles attend defeats the purpose of our group! Many events have a limited number of volunteers needed, and filling up those slots with non-singles means there are fewer people to meet.

Remember, there are other ways that you can stay involved:

  • Give back to SVSF by working behind the scenes as a committee member or event coordinator. Many of our executive committee members are currently in relationships, but want to see SVSF help the community by continuing to provide terrific volunteer opportunities for singles.
  • Give back to the community by volunteering as a couple directly with a charity or through one of the community organizations found on our SVSF Partner Links page.

Why aren't there any events in my area?

We have volunteers as far north as Martin county and as far south as Miami-Dade, but you may have noticed there are not that many events and activities in those areas. The simple answer is: we need people to lead events there! Think about it - the best place for you to coordinate and lead an event is where you live or work. You'll meet new people who are most likely from your area...and they are likely to be interested in the same kinds community issues or socials activities as you are (or they would not have signed up for the event!).

Find out more about leadership opportunities on our Build Your Resume page.

How can my non-profit organization get help from Single Volunteers?

SVSF needs not only volunteers, but also organizations that are looking for help! In order to qualify, your organization must:

  • Be willing to accept a team of no less than 6 volunteers of mixed gender for any one project. Larger group projects are encouraged and appreciated, but we can accept assignments of no less than 6 volunteers per event.

  • Be a non-profit or not-for-profit organization.

  • Have work that will allow our volunteers to interact with one another while working to complete your project.

  • Have work that needs to be done - our volunteers like to keep busy at events!

If your organization would like to enlist the services of SVSF please see our Need Volunteers? page, and submit the request form to begin the process.
